Time to pull a training rest audible...

Today, I planned to take the 5-hour drive home from Ann Arbor, do my long bike ride, and do a brick run. I could also skip training and take an impromptu rest day.

My body has been so beat up since last week, and I am concerned about running. I hadn't run since August 18th due to injury, and then this week, I did over 2.5 hours of running, two of which were an hour long., not to mention the triple workout I did on Friday, doing a bike, swimming, and weights.

In the past, I would just muscle through and not rest. I trained seven days a week and felt that if I rested, it was a mental weakness. I truly didn't understand the physical benefits of rest.

I woke up this morning tired because I forgot to use my CPAP machine last night. It happens. I start watching TV before bed, and the next thing you know, I fall asleep and wake up unrested. The CPAP really works. When I use it, I'm not tired the next day. When I don't use it, I'm exhausted, and by the end of the day, I fall asleep on the couch with hour-long naps, at minimum.

I'm loving these road trips. We have done four this year: Pittsburg, Cleveland, and Ann Arbor twice. Nothing is better than driving a convertible Corvette with the roof down on the highway and everywhere else. If it's not raining, the roof is down.

Purchasing the Corvette is one of the best purchases we've ever made. It's so fun and freeing. It's also great to see little kids' faces when you go by, and they point at it. So many people come up to us and look at it or comment, "Nice car." There is something about a Corvette, especially the C8 version that everyone loves.

I love that it's not a Ferrari, Lamborgini, or McLaren that you can't enjoy. With a Corvette, you can take it anywhere without worrying that someone will scratch or damage it. It's not pretentious, and it's part of North American folklore. With one of the exotic supercars, I'd want to avoid parking it outside of a hotel without fear of someone doing damage.

We plan on driving this car until we can only sell it for parts. We got it in January 2023 and already have 24,000 km on it. It's been a great car; there have been no issues, and it feels part of the family. From when we ordered it until when we got it, it took 1.5 years, and it was worth the wait. There is nothing like driving in the warm heat, roof down, and the 70s tunes cranked up loud.

The only thing is that in the Corvettte, you want to go fast. It's 490 horsepower, and it can fly. I'm not going to say I speed, in fear of it incriminating me, but let's just say I learned that the car will only go 250 kph/155 mph with the roof down, as it has a governor that won't allow it to go any faster unless the convertible roof is closed.

We stopped in Dearborn at Ford's Garage on the way home for lunch. It was a really cool place. We overheard a waitress at Chilli's in Ann Arbor tell a table of people that Dearborn has excellent food. They were right; at least Ford's Garage did. I'm surprised at how nice Detroit has been; it seems like lots to do. I think of Detroit as a dangerous city, but from what we see of the suburbs, it is very nice. We plan on going back to visit. It's only 4 hours away from us.

My evening was spent on the sofa snoozing. My biggest challenge now is getting back onto my strict diet. I did well in Ann Arbor, but it was restaurant food, lots of barbeque, and more calories than I used to. But a major win was that I didn't have any alcohol and was not tempted. After yesterday's run and the realization that I'm still at least 40 lbs overweight, I have no desire to sabotage my efforts.

Rest Day #2 this week - Body Beat up.

Weekly totals - 8 hours 16 min - 77.74 km of training.
