My first triple...
I snapped out of that pretty quickly, thinking about staying on track with my diet and training to get into the shape I needed to be in to finish the race. There is a bit of self-sabotage in thinking about it this evening.
The training choice was to ride my bike or go for a swim. Swimming is my least favorite session, and biking is something I like, but today would be my third straight day of riding, and I'm not sure how my legs would feel.
I chose to go for the bike ride, which would be 1 hour and 20 minutes. That amount of time has been my long Saturday ride, and today, it was just a normal ride because I changed my training to do more biking as I can't run.
The upside is that in 1 hour and 20 minutes, I could do my old route, which was 32 km, and that distance feels like a real ride.
As I rode, I was passed a few times, and I laughed to myself as I was going so slow. I keep thinking if they only knew how fast I used to be able to ride, they wouldn't have a chance to catch me. I had circumstances where I caught groups like them drafting, and I would pass them, then drop them as a group. It's not fair. No matter how much training you did in the past, if you don't continue the training, you lose it.
My ride tonight was okay. I did notice my heart rate is getting lower, but it's still way too high. For the ride, I was to keep my heart rate under 123 bpm for 1 hour 20 minutes and I was only able to keep it in that range for 5 minutes and 22 seconds. There is just no way I can keep it in that range right now as hard as I try unless I was riding a mountain bike or cruiser bike with a basket in the front around the neighborhood.
All I'm hoping is that the more I ride, eventually, I'll lose enough weight to keep my heart rate down. In the past, for me to get my heart rate up to 130 bpm on the bike, I'd have to go hard. I feel like Al Bundy thinking about my old glory days and comparing.
Mind you I follow Simon Cross, a buddy on Zwift, he got fat and out of shape, then got back into it a few years ago and is back crushing it like he did 14 years ago and he's my age. I see him back doing 180 km training rides and averaging 33 kph, and I just saw today that he did a training run at a 5:15 per km pace. It just shows me it can be done.
I don't think it will happen that I get in the old shape in the next four months, but it can happen. I was thinking about Mike Tyson, who's 57 years old, on my bike ride and that he's fighting a 28-year-old Jake Paul. As much as I want Mike to be in great shape and beat the hell out of Jake Paul, I can't but think that going from zero to fighting shape in 8 - 10 months is not a lot of time. If he had 2 years to get in shape, I think it would be a different story.
The one thing that needs mentioning is that I can't stop peeing. I pee anywhere from 2 to 4 times while I sleep, and during the day, I go to the bathroom at least every hour. In the past, when I lost the most weight, I went to the bathroom all the time as well.
After my ride, I had my protein shake, banana, and some cherries; prior, I had my beta-alanine. About 30 minutes after the ride, I started to feel sick. My body is tingly, which is a side effect of the beta-alanine. On the one hand, I don't want to take it so I don't feel lousy after the ride, but on the other hand, I want to take it to help my recovery and increase my training effort.
I am on blood pressure pills, and the training is definitely keeping my blood pressure lower. I'm hoping that when I get down to my goal weight and am in decent shape, I won't need them. I guess we'll see. I also have to use a CPAP machine for sleep apnea, which I'm sure is due to my weight. Although I will say I like having it, I'm not sure if this is true, but I feel it gives me more air into my system and aids my recovery.
Bike - 1:20:23 - 32.61 km - 24.3 kph/avg pace
