First week of Carnivore diet in the books...

I started the carnivore diet last Monday. Before that, I spent January just eating less and avoiding snacking and junk food.

In January, I started at 230.4 lbs and ended up at 226.8 lbs, losing a whopping 3.6 lbs. It was a little frustrating after working so hard. Especially when the first 3 days, I did a 72-hour fast, no food, just liquids.

The reality was I lost those 3.6 lbs in the first 3 days, and then for the rest of the month, I stayed in the 226+/- for the balance. I had never seen that before. It was a flat line.

At the end of the month, I figured I needed to do something different, so I decided to go on the carnivore diet, eating nothing but meat. The first week's results have been impressive. I've gone from 226.8 lbs to 223.2 lbs in 7 days. That's a 3.6 lb weight loss in the first week. Winning.

There have been other positives other than the 3.6 lb weight loss. After the first few days, I noticed I didn't want to eat. I wasn't hungry. I'd eat meat and was satisfied. I've gotten away from mindless snacking. If I want to snack, I eat meat leftovers and am satisfied.

The other benefit is after a week, I'm already somewhat sick of eating meat. When I do think of eating food, I think of meat in my mind's eye, and it's not appealing, and I don't eat mindlessly. The only time I do eat is when I really do have to eat.

More benefit is I'm saving money on toilet paper. I might take a number two every 2 or 3 days, and even then, there is only a little. However, it is crayon-like and will color the toilet boil. What we save on toilet paper will be spent on toilet bowl cleaning products.

My mood is balanced. I don't find myself getting too excited or too low. My energy is also balanced. I don't see myself getting too tired or needing to nap. Prior I was passing out on the couch nearly daily.

The surprising thing I thought would be a problem is working out without energy or bonking because I'm not eating.  It hasn't been. So far it's so good.

The most positive is my mindset. I don't crave food throughout the day or feel that I'm missing out on eating food. I'm finding I'm eating less and naturally cutting my meals down to only a couple a day from three, and I wouldn't be surprised if I ended up eating only once a day.

Years ago, I did the potato diet for 30 days. It was torture. I ate nothing but potatoes without any toppings, just salt and pepper. I could boil, bake or eat raw. That's all. I can say that after 30 days, I never wanted to eat a potato again. I had potato PTSD.

On the meat diet, it's better. I can eat all types of meat. I've had beef, chicken, pork, and fish of wide varieties. Yesterday I even smoked a brisket with no rub but just salt and pepper. I like it even more than when I do the heavy rub. I'm not burping up smoked flavor for the day with only salt and pepper seasoning.

Working out-wise, I'm doing some weights and walking daily. I'm running and biking, typically for 40 minutes, and keeping my heart rate low. Calling it running is a stretch. I should refer to it as a shuffle.

Combining my weight loss in January with my first week of February on carnivore, I'm down 7.2 lbs. I'm happy with that. For the first time, I've noticed my shirt is looser and has become longer. I didn't think 7.2 lbs was that much until Alice told me that a package of bacon is 1/2 lb and that I've lost 14 packages of bacon. The reality is I've already eaten about 3 packages of bacon in the last week.

The big question is, what will my cholesterol be after doing the carnivore diet for a month. In my YouTube research, 1/3 go high, 1/3 stay the same, and the final 1/3 go low. In a month or two, I'll return to my doctor to get my blood work done to check it.

Ultimately, I don't care about high cholesterol in the short term so long as I lose weight. Once the weight is lost, I can always go back to my other low-cholesterol diet. Still, I'm feeling so good it will be interesting to see if going back to a regular diet will be noticeably negatively different.

Last week I did eat out at a restaurant twice, once for dinner and the other at Denny's for breakfast. It's easier than I thought it would be. I like the carnivore diet because I don't need to worry about counting calories.

Week 1 - Down 3.6 lbs / 223.2 lbs.
