Finally...a breakthrough on the bike...

Image
It's taken me 11 weeks since I started this journey to have a decent bike ride. I averaged 28.1 kph, which is much better than all those 23—and 24-kph rides the previous week, and it didn't kick my butt this time like my last ride, where a 27.3 kph ride kicked my butt yesterday.  I can tell summer is over. Sunset is happening sooner. I just got out the door in time, and by the time I got home, it was only 15 minutes away from darkness.  The one thing I realized and remembered while I rode was that I needed to push hard and put myself in the pain zone. The difference between today and years ago, when I was strong on the bike, is that years ago, I welcomed the pain and even enjoyed it. I'm getting back to mentally preparing myself to push myself into the pain zone and enjoy it.  I'm also feeling much more comfortable on the bike. I was shakey for the most part, but after a couple of weeks of riding my new bike, I'm feeling much more stable. The bike definitely absorbs...

I kicked my own ass...

I woke up feeling almost no dizziness this morning, except when I bent down to brush my teeth. Once I stood up, I was a little dizzy—not as severe as yesterday, but slightly.  This morning, I was very tired. My schedule included a swim and a bike ride, but I couldn't push myself to the pool, so I postponed it until later today.  The other session was my bike ride. I couldn't miss this one. I had to work out today, or it would be a slippery slope. I need to get back into my routine after the weekend, and I can't afford to lose my gains. My legs are also feeling better, and I wanted to see if there was any improvement in bike speed.  I got out the door in the late afternoon for my ride, and early in the ride, I decided to make it a strong effort, pushing myself harder than I usually would. I didn't care about the workout intensity of the coaching program. I decided that if I was going to increase my average speed, I needed to stress my legs and go into the pain zone, whi...

Dizzy day...

Image
I woke up in the middle of the night to go pee-pee. As I walked to the bathroom I couldn't walk straight I was leaning right and having to push myself off the wall. I thought something was wrong, or I was beyond tired.  When I woke up, I was able to answer my earlier question. Something was wrong, though, and I felt off balance and nausea. I was so dizzy and off-balance when I got into the shower that I thought I would fall. I had my hands on the sides of the shower to keep balance. This off-balance feeling stayed with me all day. I checked my blood pressure, and it was fine. The feeling I had was similar to when you bend over and get up fast, and you see stars. I'm not going to lie; I was a little worried. I decided there was no way I would do the long ride I didn't do yesterday and eventually called my doctor.  I called at the right time. He had an opening at 3:30pm. He did a series of tests and determined it wasn't a brain issue. He narrowed it down to my ears and th...

Done like Dinner...

I woke up with the sorest and most tired legs I've felt in a long time. My plan was to take the 4-hour drive home and then go on my 2-hour bike ride. It didn't happen. When I got home, it was later, and I wasn't sure if I'd be able to get the ride in before it got dark. Honestly, I just couldn't do it. My legs were spent, but I think it was mostly my mind and not being motivated to do it. It had been three straight days of drinking and not eating the best.  A part of me wanted to make it four days in a row. Instead, I fell asleep on the couch. I was so tired that I forgot to put on my CPAP.  After my nap I decided to stretch and then do some weight training. I knew if I didn't do anything it would be a slippery slope. I really pushed the weights. I'm continuing to increase it workout after workout and starting to feel the improvements.  I spent a lot of time stretching, especially my neck, hoping that stretching it would make it easier to stay aero in the ae...

College Football time...

I woke up this morning semi-roughly from having some Vizzy's and junk food the night before. My calf was feeling better, so I decided to go for a run. It was a scheduled long run of 1 hour and 25 minutes, and I planned to run but not that long, maybe an hour.  For the first 30 minutes, there were no issues. It seemed that the leg weight lifting, elliptical, and massage helped. Then, around 31 minutes in, I could feel the stress on my calves, which was not feeling right. It wasn't in the same spot as before, but it was tender.  Initially, the run was fun. However, there were sidewalks that ended, and it wasn't great for running. Then I went down a dead-end street and got lucky. At the end of the street, there was a park with trails running through the trees. It was really nice and made the ride much more enjoyable.  When I got back to the hotel, I felt okay. But as the day went on, my legs started to feel stiff and sore, which surprised me.  Prior to the game, we pick...

Racing to Michigan...

Image
Friday is my off day and after work it was off to Michigan to attend the Michigan State Spartans vs Ohio State Buckeyes.  It's a four-hour drive, and when you have a convertible Corvette with 495 horsepower, it's hard not to go fast. There is a lot of weaving in and out to pass cars. It's like a mini race, and thank goodness I have Waze to let me know when there are Police ahead.  We got to Lansing, Michigan, by 7:30 pm, just before dark, and it was off to Walmart and Kroeger to get some food and drink. Alice got her rum, and I got my Vizzy's. When we got home, it was cocktail hour and pepperoni, cheese, and crackers. I also got some popcorn.  All the stuff I shouldn't be eating and drinking the second day in a row.  No Training - Rest Day

Thursdays are a squeeze day...

On Thursdays, I have double workouts: a swim and a bike ride, and it seems I always get it done in the time I have.  This morning, I got up a little late and pushed myself out the door for my swim. This swim was easier than most—more of a recovery swim and longer distance intervals. The only bummer was that my underwater iPod didn't work. It fell on the ground the last swim I had and bent the corner so that the on/off button wouldn't work. Later in the afternoon, between meetings, I slipped out and did a ride in the late afternoon. I thought I'd miss the traffic in the escarpment, which I did, but on the way, I ran into the mom and dads picking up their kids from school. I don't know which is more dangerous.  The ride was pretty good; I averaged over 25 kph, but the downside was that a piece of plastic covering wires in the bike's frame fell off. The wires are now exposed, and I need to contact Canyon to get a new one. I had a feeling this was going to happen as it ...
